Went on a crazy mission to find BooksActually at Tiong Bahru today, and thanks to lovely Baogey, we managed to find it without getting lost! Promptly went crazy in the store, according to Elainn, I was smiling to myself.

altAlknb_66h0ZPUAsNItewHxr5kmpfZ1XsnIRldCpC5VRz

The whole store looked so quaint and so.. homely. I loved it! Bought two local works, The Billion Shop by Stephanie Ye and Careless by Jacqueline Ong. Was quite taken by Careless on first read and it truly hasn’t disappointed! 🙂 And because there was a 20% discount for 3 books, I bought Walks in the Wheat Fields by Richard Jefferies.

To be honest, I bought it because the cover had a bunny on it. I just can’t resist good covers! Also got a notepaper set for my new quotes collation book.

We then proceeded to Woods in the Books where I ended up buying 2 postcards that I simply couldn’t resist. I will definitely be heading back! Just being in the store makes me happy – there’s Beatrix Potter, A. A Milne (author of Pooh) and classics such as Wind in the Willows, all beautifully illustrated and so, so quaint.

Elainn had been asking me out for cafe hunting trips since November but I kept putting it off but today I was truly hooked. We went to Drips cafe and lo and behold, I had some of the most exceptional banana cake ever! Enjoyed an ice mocha and a nice afternoon catching up with Elainn.

altAnOP6Hfwt6jsqfBm9KKNSiHaFXhqcCxlsOstAsH_qmJl

Our next stop was Commonwealth for Elainn’s Starbucks interview. If I’ve got a barista friend, you can bet my caffeine intake is going to skyrocket. And to hell with the calories, I couldn’t care less. While she was having her interview, I finished a most wonderful play – Everything But the Brain. I really, really loved it, and got inspired to try out having 3 narrators in my play. This device was used in The Good Person of Szechwan by Bertolt Brecht (which is my favourite play of all time) and I’ll have fun toying around with this idea!

I really loved today – it’s one of the few days I actually totally relaxed and enjoyed myself. Books fill both my head and heart with so much! And possibly, this is the reason why I write – to fill someone else’s head and heart with unique emotion. 🙂

25 | Time.

In the world of fast cars, fast computers and even faster people, we expect everything pronto.

Connectivity has us checking our phones every few seconds, expecting text replies within a quarter of an hour, calls to be returned within the hour, emails to be replied, funds to be transferred within the day.

Maybe we are moving too fast and losing sight of what it really means to be connected.

Perhaps we should think about being connected in heart instead of over a network. Or better still, think of being connected as souls, not as brains in a vat.

They used to receive replies within three years.. or a few months, if they were very, very lucky.

I should learn the virtues of patience.

23 | 22 Ways To Make Me Fall in Love With You

(cr: x)

  1. Be protective, because what’s yours can easily be stolen by force.
  2. Go on a wild goose chase for Chef Tony’s popcorn, or to the theatres with me at 12MN  just to buy a box of popcorn. Never underestimate the power of popcorn on me.
  3. Recognize that a clean house, paid bills and chicken (CHICKEN!) will be more appreciated than chocolates, teddy bears and roses on Valentine’s day.
  4. Give special pieces of your heart to the woman with the haunted look in her eyes, the homeless man on the street corner, the whimpering cat by the rubbish chute. Try not to judge them before you know their story. Offer love where it is not necessarily prescribed.
  5. Sing in the car, on the streets, by the beach, whereever the tune takes you.
  6. Tell me about the things that make you you, about the things that you’re afraid to show, and about the things you don’t know how I’ll respond to. Don’t hide yourself in guessing games and battles of will. Be who you are, and you will see love accorded to it.
  7. Take me shopping, and be the one to suggest outfits and styles. You don’t have to pay.
  8. Indulge me in deep, thinking conversations about human nature, psychology, ambitions, the future, and the concept of infinity.
  9. Be gentle with children. Know that these are the gems of my heart, and that just as I do not condone child abuse, I do not condone spoiling a child either. Treat a child with respect and seek opportunities to tell them about moral lessons. Never roughhouse with a child.
  10. Drink on my behalf.
  11. Take long, whimsical walks with me along the longest streets and the most winding routes.
  12. Appreciate that sleeping without a soft comforter and a good bolster is almost impossible for me.
  13. Reflect on movies with me after we’ve watched them, and have an argument that is stronger than, “The fight scenes were really cool.”
  14. Show me how I am more special than the rest of the girls in the room.
  15. Know the gravity of emotions that a simple hug can convey. And know that no other mode of affection – words, kisses or cuddling – could ever do the same.
  16. Help me open the bottles, cans and packaging that I can’t on my own.
  17. Sunny good morning texts with a sweet message and liberal use of emoticons.
  18. Try to understand me just as I try to understand you – not just superficially, but asking and clarifying until you understand where I am coming from.
  19. Face issues with me, not on your own.
  20. Acknowledge that my priorities are the human factors in every situation, not the logic or reason.
  21. Be, at the very least, fitter than me.
  22. Realize that cherry-cola lollipops and dark chocolate is the last key to my heart.

22 | If You Can Get His Attention

If you can get my boyfriend’s attention, you can have him.

Yes, I’m serious. I want a mature man who won’t easily deviate from me, just because there’s something that looks nice along the way. I want someone steadfast and sure enough that his choice is the right one for him, even if it’s not the best, or the most attractive. Why should another girl get in the way? This argument never has to take place. I’m not asking him to think that I’m the best, but I’m asking him to be sure of his choice. If he falters because he sees something momentarily or superficially better, then yes, you can have him. I don’t want him.

21 | Gung Hei Fat Choi: 15 Days of CNY!

恭喜發財!

Chinese New Year this year has been wonderful (not because of the angpows.. but it’s been a bumper year) because of the visiting! Surprise surprise, I know my childhood friends will be shocked coz I never liked visiting but this year it’s changed!! 🙂 Family can truly never be replaced!

除夕夜: STEAMBOAT AT HOME

CNYmakan

This was taken before the food was placed on the table. Doesn’t look appetizing right? Look again.

cnymakan2

A feast for five!

This was part of the celebration for my great-grandmother, who turned 102 this year! 🙂 She’s still alert and can be quite fierce: she’ll claw and kick you if you happen to cross her. But she can be quite cute sometimes, especially when she lunges for food on the table or pinches my cheeks and won’t let go. She’s cute. :>
There was so much meat that I couldn’t stop eating! From my first bite, I attacked the chicken until I cleaned off half the plate before moving on to the beef, carrots and fishballs. 🙂 Was a very filling dinner indeed. I love steamboats because it’s way healthier than teppanyaki and it’s so easy to have fun cooking together as a family too. Fuss-free enjoyment!

初一:TO THE GRANDMOTHERS’!

chuyi

Set off for 婆婆’s house first, where we spent time horsing around and just when everyone got comfortable, we left 😦 We later went to Ahma’s house, where I saw the most amazing sight of my CNY.

chickensighting

Yes, it’s a real chicken. Yes, it’s in Singapore. And yes, it was in a HDB area.

It was raining so heavily, and the chicken was drenched through and through, so maybe this is the authentic 落汤鸡! Hehe. Also, it might have caught a cold.. bird flu? o_O

I met my crazy lil’ furkid! She went completely bonkers from the moment I stepped in and she followed me around the house. Such a lovely girl!

happy furkid

That’s her begging to be hugged. ♥

初二: RELATIVES COME A-VISITIN’

My father’s cousins came to visit and made the house very cheery indeed 🙂 My great grandma, who turned 102 this year, was exceptionally cute that day and really warmed up to the crowd. Guess the festive mood hits everyone regardless of age, huh?

初三: CATCHING UP WITH OLD ACQUAINTANCES

chusan2

Outfit of the day! Didn’t dare to wear this dress until that day 🙂

Right, the acquaintances aren’t mine, they’re my mom’s. We set off for Auntie Caixia’s place earlier in the morning, and we met Aunty Jenny there. Both are old friends of my mom’s and watched me grow up. What interested me most probably was the talk about fengshui and the memories they talked about: which brings me to my point, I love it when there’s sharing of knowledge or just recollections of the past! There’s so much to be gained from talking and being social, I don’t understand why people would just sit in a corner and quietly fiddle with their gadgets. Can’t you do that at a more appropriate time?

Apparently, I used to be terribly afraid of Aunty Caixia’s bridal shop when I was young. And I’d force my grandma to take long detours just to avoid even seeing the shop. Wonderful brat I was!

chusan

Aunty Caixia’s condo @ The Quartz.

After that, we set off for Elaine jie’s house. 🙂 In case y’all didn’t know, I am an only child but I have a huge extended family.. or at least, I consider them to be. That’s my godfamily. 🙂 They’re a wonderful, warm, bonded bunch of people and I love love just being around them during the festive seasons because it really feels like home with them. :’) But there’s some gap because I’m neither in the younger age range nor in the older age range, so I’m kind of in the middle of nowhere.. but I do my best to mingle.

On the way there, I spotted kites in the sky and immediately asked my dad to specially detour for me to get a clear pic!

octopus kites

So beautiful, right? Those are octopus kites! There’s a stingray one at the bottom right corner as well. Ever since I saw the lighted LED kites while I was out with Wilson a few weeks back, I have come to realize that I really LOVE looking at elaborate kites. There’s just something amazing about looking up into the sky and seeing the really intricate silhouette of a kite.

We had steamboat at Elaine jie’s house, and there was plenty of jokes over dinner and it seriously left me wanting to hang around for as long as I could. I love going over to their place, I can’t stress it enough! We then went to play Old Maid where by some stroke of luck I escaped Old Maid three times, and then the moment I boasted about it, karma bit me. -_- It was fun though, it’s the bonding over games that counts, not just the wins or the losses. Played Blackjack after that and won 150% :] Small bets, but again it’s the family that counts! The feeling of togetherness just made me feel very very loved among them. 🙂 Will be looking forward to our next gathering!

On the way back, we saw lighted LED kites!

初四: GODPA

Right, after seeing my mom’s best friend (my maternal Godma & Godpa), I went to visit my Dad’s best friend (my paternal Godpa) and we met my paternal Godma! Haven’t seen her in ages so I totally didn’t recognize her. I recognized Godpa though, he’s just as I remember him – humourous, warm, friendly and amiable. It’s easy to love someone like him! We went to Uncle Fai’s house (Godpa’s brother, am I confusing y’all?) and had dinner there. Watched Bosco Wong perform 将冰山劈开 on TV, at the TVB Viva Spectacular. I know I was there, but seriously, that song is just epic. Later, I watched 寒戰, an epic Hongkong police film. It was SO good and Aaron Kwok despite his age is still so buff and handsome. How does he do it, huh?

We had a great dinner with Cantonese dishes, and also had lao yu sheng. What a great CNY get-together!

.

.

.

After this CNY, I haven’t gained weight, neither have I won very big, but I think it’s really the people that made this CNY count. And also, I have resolved to pin down Cantonese (at least speaking) by the next CNY. I love the language! I’m beginning to see the point of the language-dialect debate now, and I do recognize it as a language. Although it has its roots in Chinese, its grammatical structure, writing form and sounds are completely different. C’mon, declare it as a deviant language already!

[EDIT: 15 FEB 2013]

初五:喜上加囍!

I-Love-Hong-Kong-2013-poster-217x300

Caught a movie alone today, for the first time, I LOVE HONGKONG 2013. It was kinda creepy, I went to GV Yishun to watch it and I got the corner seat of the back row. Kept imagining scary things behind me. But once the show came on, I got engrossed in.. Bosco Wong!

Bosco kinda looks like a Pokemon trainer.. no?

Somehow it didn’t matter that he had helmet hair and totally uncool specs and acted like a pushover. He still had that X-factor that kept me glued to the screen. Alright it’s a biased opinion, but the show was really good. Captured the essence of CNY, and pinned down the lessons I learnt this year: that family ties, and sentimental value, will and must always override money!

Caught the train down to Sembawang and hopped onto a shuttle bus to visit Elainn at her workplace. Brought her a can of coffee and was utterly disgusted at the Giant salesperson, who, when asked where to find the coffee, said, “Oh, it’s in front.” No shit Sherlock, I wouldn’t have asked if I could find it, right?

Met Jean for dinner at Just Acia afterwards and shopped around. Silly girl left her badminton racquet in Popular and we called Popular so many times only to encounter a busy line. The shop was pretty empty actually.. just saying.

Found Rachel @ Lot One and had supper with her. The usual craziness ensued.

It was a fruitful day~ 🙂

[EDIT: 21 FEB 2013]

初 I don’t know what already:IN BETWEEN!

Headed to MAJ Lim’s house to, erm, earn money. Yeah that’s the word 😉 Had a great game of Blackjack & In Between with Keeboon, Simchun, Weetiong & Javier. Seriously man, when you play In Between, you just cannot be greedy!

Till next time,
xoxo Chels

20 | Starhub TVB Golden Viva Spectacular

Sooooo..

I’ve been busying myself with events over events in addition to my theatre work and Korean.

First heard of this TVB event on Twitter, and decided immediately that I’d like to go for it. Why? Bosco Wong.

I’ve been a huge TVB fan since young, and the dramas I’ve loved count in the tens. Of course I won’t be able to remember those from 2000, although I did watch those too! But here are my favourites drama by year:

2006: Forensic Heroes 1 (法證先鋒) – The best, and always will be!
2007: Heart of Greed (溏心風暴), Ten Brothers (十兄弟), Dicey Business (賭場風雲)
2008: Moonlight Resonance (溏心風暴之家好月圓), The Four (少年四大名捕)
2009: Beyond the Realm of Conscience (宮心計)
2010: Ghost Writer (蒲松齡), Life and Times of a Sentinel (紫禁驚雷)
2011: Relic of an Emissary (洪武三十二), Curse of the Royal Harem (萬凰之王), Lives of Omission (潛行狙擊)
2012: Witness Insecurity (護花危情), The Confidant (大太监), The Hippocratic Crush (On Call 36小時), L’escargot (缺宅男女)

Of course, of these I love love love the ancient shows, especially the ones with the costumes and all, but not so much of the modern-historic kind (1900s-1980s). It’s the palace intrigue ones! Of course, those that don’t include Palace Intrigue either has Kevin Cheng, Bosco Wong, Him Law, or a really amazing storyline/great love-line.

boscowong

Bosco Handsome Wong.

kevinchengjaynestars

Kevin Leng Zai Cheng.

him law

Him Abs Law.

Of the actors and actresses I like, suffice it to say that Kevin Cheng, Him Law and Bosco Wong have topped the list for many, many years. Fala Chen is also an old favourite!

Thus the reason why I went for this was mainly because my current obsession is Witness Insecurity and I really really want to see Bosco! Who would pass up this chance, right?

At 6.30PM after a full day of shopping (with two huge, heavy bags), I headed towards the Esplanade where I found out to great shock that Nanhua Symphonic Band was having its concert there too! My mind immediately went into overdrive and seriously, the coincidences hit an epic high when Ridhwan (Ah Boys To Men) came and this schoolgirl in front of me shouted, “RIDHWAN!!! Where’s the rest?” and he replied, “Oh, they’re inside.” And immediately I was like, “Who? What? AH BOYS TO MEN????” I took a closer look at a nearby poster and realized that OMG yes they were performing! I only saw the TVB version of the poster as above and not the official one. Everyone should already know I am a huge fan of Ah Boys To Men (I support local talent la ok?) so I went crazy. Too many coincidences in one day!

Made friends with two other girls, Sonia and Zephania (cool names man) and we went in together. The queuing was insane, and the way they let us enter the venue was even worst. First they added suspense by allowing 2 busloads of unidentified queue-cutters to enter the venue. Then they opened ONE gate to allow the HUGE crowd to squeeze through. It ended up in much pushing, me being squashed against a gate and some irritating aunty shouting in my ear, “EH BRO!! We queue up two hours already leh!!” I dearly wanted to plant my palm in her face. I was there way earlier than her, she cut my queue, and she still complain! If this isn’t legit evidence that people can complain about everything and everything, what is?

Once we got in we got free lightsticks (after the event, a lot of aunties went around picking the lightsticks, don’t know why also) and we got a nice seat. There was a slight drizzle but thank goodness it didn’t go all thunderstorm on us like it was forecasted to. Cho-lam and the DJ got on stage and we began the night by.. acting like circus monkeys. That aside, Ah Boys To Men cast began by performing their CNY song:

and i completely love it!!

This is probably the only CNY song that I wouldn’t mind going on loop, not just because of the cast, but because the singing is just really good and it’s so catchy!

This guy called Alfred came up next and we all fell for his voice.

There were many more performances, but let’s focus on the one I came for – BOSCO! Leng zai leng zai! (pretty boy in Cantonese)

The moment he appeared there was frantic screaming on my side because the office ladies in front of me were his fans. Seriously, they were in heels and work wear and they were screaming louder and behaving crazier than I was! His fanclub also went mad because their chant of “/whistle whistle BOSCO” went completely hilter-kilter!

So at first he came on (he is SO handsome irl!) and performed a rock song, but what comes after that is the important part.

This song first crashed into my life when my uncle sang it and his rendition had me in stitches for the entire duration of the song. From then on this song became somewhat comic relief and “family song” for us, y’know. And Bosco sang it.

I went crazy because hey, this is just one too many coincidences! I’ll try to upload my fancams after editing and then you all can see the handsome suaveness that is Bosco Wong.

There was a cool laser show after that featuring Ron Ng and Kenneth Ma and I remember exchanging looks with Zeph and we were all completely mindblown because the guy was using laser lights like they were real rods.

During the curtain call, there was a point of time where Bosco whipped out tissues to wipe Ron’s sweat and the whole venue practically exploded in frantic fangirl screams. That was even louder than when he hugged the female DJ. From someone who comes from the “don’t-you-dare-touch-another-female” Kpop fandoms, this is amazing by a long shot.

.

.

.

In conclusion.. I think the event made me happy. I mean sometimes it’s not so much about the quality of the show (don’t get me wrong, it was pretty good) but it’s the happiness it brings you. It’s a rough patch for me now, and I need all the encouragement I can get! 🙂
